When entertainment mogul David Geffen sold Jackson Pollock's No.5, 1948 for around $140 million he sent the art world into a spin. The price tag made the painting the most expensive ever, topping the $135 million paid earlier this year for Gustav Klimt's Adele Bloch-Bauer I.

It is believed that Geffen then went on to sell another of his paintings, Willem de Kooning's Woman III, to billionaire Steven A. Cohen for around $137 million, making it the second most expensive painting ever sold.
