Christmas Events

December 4 2006

There’s nothing like Jesus’s birthday and the promise of a new year to bring out the big music outfits and all the best celebratory music. The 60-strong Australian Philharmonic Orchestra has invited trumpet meister James Morrison to be their special guest for their post-Christmas pre-New Year gigs, under the title What a Swell Party!

With Operatunity Oz finalist Roy Best contributing the heart-stopping “che gelida manina” aria (Rodolfo’s discovery that poor Mimi’s tiny hand is frozen) from La Boheme; host Lewis Fiander and Alan (Dr Karl Kennedy) Fletcher, dueting on “Well, Did You Ever ...” from High Society - hence the show title - it promises to be a swell-egant, elegant party; particularly if you add Bernadette (You Might as Well Live) Robinson to the guest list along with Gershwin, Cole Porter, the Macquarie University Singers and the Willoughby Symphony Choir et al.

Dying to see how they deal with “Seventy Six Trombones” - even with James Morrison in the house ...

What a Swell Party - Australian Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Barry Knight; Sydney Opera House Concert Hall, December 27 & 28; ph: 9250 7777 or www.sydneyoperahouse.com
