London’s Theatre Museum under threat

December 23 2006

Fabulous actress and concerned citizen Kerry Walker has alerted us to a dire situation in London: in order to save a few bob the Victoria & Albert Museum is aiming to close down the Theatre Museum in Russell Street, Covent Garden on January 7.

The trustees of the Museum are furious with the Great Elephant of South Kensington (V&A) because the savings gained are miniscule compared to the vast sums spent by the parent institution. And, say the trustees, the Theatre Museum has a far greater visitation rate, per square luvvie, than the big place.

The point is, however, that the Theatre Museum is unique and a priceless asset to millions (including any Australian whose interests lie in theatre). Derek Jacobi has described the plan as "an act of artistic vandalism" and he should know. Basically, the V&A ought to take its paws off.

The aim is a petition of 100,000 signatures, transforming each person into a Guardian of the Theatre Museum - please add yours and pass on the link. It’s so simple. Just follow these easy steps:

Fill in your name and tick a couple of boxes and ... er, that's it!
