File this one under 'what were they thinking?'. Xanadu, the widely panned 1980 film starring Olivia Newton-John is set to become a musical, opening on Broadway next year. The show is written by Douglas Carter Beane, based on the screenplay by Richard Christian Danus and Marc Reid Rubel, and is directed by Tony-nominee Christopher Ashley.
If there is any light at the end of the tunnel it’s that the production claims to be tongue in cheek, playing off the movie’s disastrous public and critical reception as well as its ‘so bad it’s good’ cult status. It also stars Cheyenne Jackson (who was in United 93) and Jane Krakowski (best known for playing Elaine on Ally McBeal).
