GOLDEN GLOBES

January 17 2007

The Golden Globes, the movie awards viewed as a bellwether for the Oscars, delivered few surprises and much Hollywood glamour at the Beverly Hilton this week (January 16). With no obvious front-runner but plenty of hot favourites the awards were wide open. Australia’s hopes rode with George Miller’s Happy Feet and Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine) and this year neither made it to the podium.

The big award, best picture drama, went to the Brad Pitt/Cate Blanchett vehicle Babel while best picture musical or comedy went to the thinly-veiled Supremes biopic and adaptation of the stage show Dreamgirls.

Forest Whitaker picked up a best actor (drama) award for his role as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland while worldwide hot favourite Helen Mirren won for The Queen. The Brit Dame also pulled off a rare double having already picked up the best actress (TV drama) prize for her role as the earlier,Elizabeth I.

Sacha Baron Cohen surprised some by winning best actor (comedy or musical) for Borat while perpetual nominee-winner Meryl Streep - who realistically had two Best contenders for her contrasting roles in The Devil Wears Prada and A Prairie Home Companion - took the prize for the former.

The list of winners were as follows:
