Moran Prize snaps up snappers

February 11 2007

Australian born in Kazakhstan by Justin BernhautThe inaugural Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize has its 110 finalists. They're in the hunt for the $100,000 in prize money on offer for a picture on the theme "Contemporary life in Australia."

The prize will run alongside the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize - also a tempting $$ source for artists - and all funded by the biz that make its money from old folks' homes.

The Morans have been canny in establishing the attractiveness of the prizes: not just money but also reputable judges. For the photographic awards they are Elizabeth-Ann McGregor, much respected boss of the MCA and Professor Ian North, adjunct Professor of Visual Arts at the University of South Australia, and a former curator ofphotography.

Its wider influence will also be assisted by the schools and national aspects of the prize program.

A $6m fund has been established for the photographic prizes and to expand the scope and size of the original art prize. Prizes are administered by Karen-Jane Eyre, former editor in-chief, Black+WhiteMagazine.

The winners in all categories will be announced at the State Library of NSW on March 13, 2007, and all finalists will be exhibited at the Library and then nationally.Prize conditions and further information are outlined at www.moranprizes.com.au
