Oscar Nominations

January 24 2007

The nominees for the 79th Academy Awards have been announced with the Supremes biopic that isn't, Dreamgirls, as expected, leading the list with eight nominations, three for Best Original Song. However, the film failed to get nominations for Best Picture and Best Director.

Close behind Dreamgirls on the nominations list is Babel with seven, The Queen with six and Pan's Labyrinth, also with six.

Australians figuring in the lists this year are George Miller, whose fourth nomination is for the Sydney-made feature animation film Happy Feet (previous nominations: two for Babe and one for Lorenzo's Oil). Cate Blanchett's is up for Best Supporting Actress for Notes on a Scandal and Toni Collette'sis in the Best Picture category. Elsewhere sort-of Aussie Mel Gibson's Apocalypto is recognised in the technical awards with nominations for sound editing, sound mixing and make-up.

The Oscars marathon is on February 25 and this year's host is Ellen de Generes, currently on screens in Australia as host of her Emmy-award-gobbling talk show. Although this is her first Oscars, De Generes has already scored with the public and industry peers as Emmy Awards host and she's in the Billy Crystal-Whoopi Goldberg tradition, so it's considered unlikely there will be another debacle like David Letterman's excruciating "Uma-Oprah" effort.
