Priscilla still Queen of the Night

January 25 2007

Great news for Sydney's tourism industry and theatregoers in search of a fun night out: Priscilla Queen of the Desert: The Musical has extended its season at Star City's Lyric theatre yet again.

Travel, corporate and group bookings (for groups of 16 and over) are now open to July with 200,000 tickets already sold for the musical story of three men and a bus in a desert.

Fresh from a whirlwind visit to the USA to promote Australia as a first-choice destination, Priscilla star Tony Sheldon (Bernadette) tells stagenoise exclusively that his shimmy along the Hollywood pink carpet on the G’Day USA tour was a career highlight.

"It was my quintessential Hollywood dream," says Sheldon. "Journalists shouting my name while hundreds of flash bulbs popped. The only problem was, I looked like Gloria Swanson instead of William Holden!"

Priscilla has now transcended her origins as the show-of-the-movie and is bringing in audiences in her own right. But why has the Old Bus succeeded where so many others (including the old ocean liner) have failed?

Producer Liz Koops says: "This is a uniquely Australian production, our strategy was always to position it as Sydney’s new, must-see attraction - both for Australians and international guests. Priscilla's word-of-mouth has been phenomenal and this has seen the show succeed and sustain such a healthy run."
