Radio: Rebecca Clarke - Unspoken - on air

November 30 2007

Performers for 'Unspoken'This year ABC Radio National commissioned a half-hour radio drama adaptation of Rebecca Clarke’s acclaimed stage play, Unspoken. It goes to air on Sunday, December 2 at 3pm.

In 2005, audiences at the Old Fitzroy in Woolloomooloo were thrilled and moved by Clarke’s one-woman story of familial love and loss. It was a remarkable work for theatre. I am happy to recall that I championed the show and its writer-performer in putting them forward for the inaugural Sydney Theatre Awards.

Clarke was awarded Best Newcomer and her show - directed by Wayne Blair - won Best Independent production. Unspoken was picked up by Performing Lines and toured extensively in 2006 and 2007. Also, the script was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Awards in the Play category and was High Commended in the Philip Parsons Playwriting Award. Currency Press then published the script.

Hear what all he fuss was about - or recapture Clarke’s tender magic as she tells the story of growing up with a beloved brother in special circumstances - this time with music from Maddy Slattery (vocals) and Vincent Goodyear (guitar) and their take on Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, U2 and, believe it or not, Rod Stewart.

If you miss the broadcast you can find it throughout December at http://www.abc.net.au/rn/airplay/
