When 'new' isn't quite

February 2 2007

The ABC's continuing refusal to come to terms with its responsibility to the arts is highlighted in the "new" arts show going to air on Radio National for the first time on Sunday, February 4.

The new show - a one hour format titled Artworks - will do up to four "in depth" stories each week. Not exactly reason for rejoicing however as it actually replaces the long running weekday morning show The Deep End, given the chop at the end of last year. That program, fronted by Amanda Smith, at least put something like 20 substantial stories to air each week, along with news, interviews and so on.

Smith remains as the presenter on Artworks, but as she is considered by some exasperated listeners to have the most irritating voice on radio, this is a mixed blessing.
