Liv Ullman in Sydney

March 4 2008

Liv Ullman, veteran Norwegian star of screen and, sometimes, stage, is in Sydney right now (first week of March), and she’s not here to enjoy the Nordic-style summer weather. Rather, she has apparently been auditioning and looking over some of our finest and has been seen in the audience at a couple of shows.

Ullman, now 69, has spent a stellar working life in front of the camera as the muse of the late and legendary Ingmar Berman. In recent years she’s taken on the directorial role herself (notably Faithless) and almost got up a screen adaptation of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, which was supposed to star the Blessed Cate as Nora.

And that brings us to consider why she’s auditioning and what for. A production for Sydney Theatre Company next year with co-artistic director starring and an adaptation of something by the other co-artistic director is the logical answer. But surely not a version of Doll’s House! (Last produced by the STC just five years ago with Miranda Otto, in an adapation by Bea Christian.) Whatever, Sydney’s theatre community is all of a-twitter at the latest STC-celeb visitor. We shall see.
