Sculpture by the Sea

By Barbara Seville
November 22 2006

This year's Sculpture by the Sea is one of the best and most fun shows yet. The works, from 108 artists from 15 countries, range from totaly silly to totally sublime along the Bondi to Tamarama cliff walk (which is sublime anyway). What's interesting is how the mood of the works changes depending on the weather. On a sunny day the lighthearted pieces just make you smile. But on a grey or rainy day, there is an air of spooky menace to some of them - you'd swear these perky bull-persons (No. 19 - The Grotto) are plotting something dire.

Weekend days are an entertainment in themselves with thousands of people trekking patiently along the paths; make it a week day if you want a "wander lonely as a cloud" experience.

Car parking is a nightmare and the traffic to and from Bondi/Tamarama is a double nightmare. So buses are the go - and wear your best springy sneakers. Also take sunscreen and something warm - out on the cliffs the weather can be really Weather when it feels like it.

Sydney Water is giving away cups of the stuff along the way and you can also stock up with an icecream or gelato at halfway, so you don't have to take emergency supplies (except for anklebiters who might need a bit more encouragement and sustenance).

Grab a "people's choice" voting slip when you're there or go to the website www.sculpturebythesea.com to be in the running to win either a gorgeous Kodak digital camera or an even more gorgeous 4-burner barbecue.
