La Clique

La Clique may very well be all of your fantasies, nightmares and illicitly induced visions come true. Part burlesque, part circus and part sideshow, La Clique is many things, but one thing that it can most certainly lay claim to is being fabulously entertaining. From the moment you take your seat in the lavish and louche Spiegeltent you know you are about to witness something very different.

La Clique was created in 2002 by David Bates as a decadent, after-hours performance piece and since its inception the show has never slowed down, constantly growing in popularity with each year and tour. Inside the historic Spiegeltent (which has been around for over 200 years) La Clique represents the very best of the weird and wonderful, featuring performers from all over the world.

Appearing in the current incarnation of the show are rubber-man Captain Frodo, balancing duo and former Melbourne street performers the English Gents, striptease artist with a difference Ursula Martinez, singer Michelangelo, juggling comedian Mario Queen of the Circus, hoola-hoop dancer Yulia Pikhtina and the bathtub acrobat and crowd favourite David O’Mer. The show also features sword-swallower Miss Behave who didn’t perform at the reviewed performance.

Not for everyone due to some of its adult content, La Clique takes audiences back to the era of the travelling circus and sideshow. With its heady mix of circus acts (O’Mer and Pikhtina) and sideshow attractions (Captain Frodo and Miss Behave) the show offers audiences the chance to see something unusual, something other circuses wouldn’t even dream of presenting. The performance is enhanced by the venue, with the unique Spiegeltent making you essentially a part of the performance, whether you like it or not.

Tickets to La Clique went fast so if you weren’t quick enough to land one you’ll have to try your luck at the ticket booth in Martin Place. It’s also worth noting that the show does contain nudity and is over 18s only.
