LUKE LLOYD ALIENOID, ATYP, 15-25 October 2014. Photography by Amy Maiden.

Wouldn’t it be cool to have an alien for a dad? Well Luke Lloyd does – or does he? This is a funny heart warming play that will make you laugh and also be a little bit sad.

It is set in what could be any school in Australia, and it tells the story of Luke Oscar Lloyd who is a young boy who never knew his dad. Luke is not like most of the boys in his school, he likes facts, is not very good at sports and would rather spend time on a computer.

Luke is played by Finn Hoegh-Guldberg, he is imaginative and very smart, he spends most of his time at school with the class mouse Kevin played by Charlotte Pitt. She is a dramatic little mouse with very sensitive feelings. And also my favourite in the play.

Mish is played by Scarlett Waters, she is the new girl at Luke’s school. She is a bit nosy and tries to be nice to Luke.

Luke’s other best friend is Astro played by Claudia Carroll who is an eccentric dog that is afraid of mice and guinea pigs. He is very funny and thinks that he is pretty cool.

The story is set out over a couple of days that start with Luke introducing himself and it then it follows him through these couple of hard days at school which end up being troubling. Then he searches for a solution and things start to change.

The overall story is about how a boy that is different gets bullied because he is not like everyone else. He then becomes friends with a girl that is very similar to him. Together they show everyone that there is nothing wrong with being different.

I recommend people aged from 8 years and up as there are different levels to the story. It was a brilliantly scripted, well put together play.
