Description

A Nest of Skunks by James Balian & Roger Vickery

Equal Runner Up, Best Script, FAW National Literary awards, 2015
Based on an award winning short story

Collaborations Theatre Group returns with the premiere of an award winning Australian play, a dark and sticky thriller about asylum seekers sheltering in a house that proves to be anything but safe.

Refugees are “dirty skunks”. They are thrown into congested processing centres and face the daily threat of being deported at a moment’s notice. Locals have formed networks of “skunk handlers” to help escaped refugees elude this fate. Urged on by shock jocks the government has responded by treating this civil disobedience as a serious crime.

Immigration teams drive through suburbs and towns, searching for skunks and their handlers. Informers move amongst them. This is the story of different points of views and motivations in a very tense and complex situation… Ultimately it’s the story of a family in hiding on the most dangerous night of their lives. The ending will surprise and subvert audience expectations.

This production brings together a seasoned and talented cast and crew who are deeply committed to this play that confronts the moral dilemmas thrown up by asylum seekers and their host countries in a dramatic and creative way.

Director Travis Green was drawn to the play because of the way it explores a very complex situation. “This new work is one of the most relevant and contemporary Australian plays I have read… It is well structured, precise and powerful without being didactic…”

“… Very original & powerful. Of all the scripts in the season, this is the one I\'m most intrigued by…” Julie Baz, Co-Artistic Director, Depot Theatre.

James Balian has a long list of film, television and stage credits as writer and director. Roger Vickery’s work has been published in Australia and overseas. He has won over 60 writing awards.
