Description

The Depot Theatre presents
EDUCATING RITA by Willy Russell
Sometimes students end up being the best teachers.

“The Depot Theatre has continually delivered a diversity of outstanding well-rounded performances.” SYDNEY SCOOP

The painfully funny and passionately serious contemporary classic, Educating Rita by multi-award winning UK writer Willy Russell, comes to The Depot Theatre in Marrickville for a limited two week season from 10 - 20 May 2017. This hilarious - and often moving - account of a young woman’s determination to change her life plays 8pm Wednesday to Saturday and 5pm Sunday in its first week, and 10am and 1pm Tuesday to Thurs and 8pm Friday and Saturday in its second week.

Frank is a tutor of English whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to drink and bury himself in his books. Enter Rita, a forthright 26 year-old hairdresser who is eager to learn. After weeks of cajoling, Rita slowly wins over the very hesitant Frank with her innate insight and refusal to accept no for an answer. Written in 1980 and winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, Educating Rita is a small intimate play, but it tells a story of big ideas, ideas close to Willy Russell's heart. There is a lot of humour in the writing, but it is also a serious play, about class and choice.
