Description
Brisbane’s indie arts gem, The Curators’ Theatre, debut their 2021 season with the Australian premiere of Lauren Gunderson’s super-hit American comedy, THE REVOLUTIONISTS.From Tuesday 2 to Friday 26 March 2021, Gunderson’s stunning, girl-powered comedy, The Revolutionists, storms not only the Bastille but into Brisbane for its Australian premiere production. Set in Paris, 1793, during the Reign of Terror, four courageous women — a writer, a freedom fighter, a queen and an assassin — give the French Revolution a “woman’s touch”. Vive les femmes!
Into the studio of the very real but forgotten French playwright, philosopher and feminist advocate, Olympe de Gouges, wafts the glittering, vivacious but confused Marie Antoinette. The tragic Charlotte Corday stops by — dagger in hand — on her way to assassinate that monster of the Revolution, Jean-Paul Marat, in his bathtub. Joining this unlikely mix is Marianne Angelle, a freedom fighter from Saint-Domingue. She is intimately acquainted with the forces of colonial oppression and she won’t stand for it anymore.
Irreverent, witty and thought-provoking, The Revolutionists sheds an alternative light on History, exploring its erasure of women and the power of both the artist and the pen to lead the charge against injustice and inequality.
Infused with live song, exquisite haute couture-inspired period costumes and a set that echoes Paris Fashion Week, this production of The Revolutionists promises to be an unforgettable theatrical tour de force about changing the world.
Frock-up and sing out loud! Join us for this sassy, badass play!
