December Theatre Co. launches its debut season with the Australian premiere of Port by Olivier Award-winning playwright Simon Stephens – the first production of the acclaimed drama ever staged on Australian soil.Set in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Port follows Rachel Keats across thirteen transformative years of her life, from adolescence to adulthood, as she attempts to find her voice and claim a future in a town that seems intent on swallowing her whole. Equal parts brutal and beautiful, Port is a portrait of working-class Britain that pulses with hope, resilience, and rage.
Directed by Nigel Turner-Carroll (The Tap Pack, Eirborne) and starring Grace Stamnas (Cock, How I Learned to Drive) and Owen Hasluck (Blue, Songbird), this rarely staged early masterpiece is a stunning showcase of Stephens’ raw emotional poetry and fierce humanity.
Port was first commissioned by the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, and first performed there on 12th November 2002. It was written whilst the writer was on a Pearson Residency at the Royal Exchange Theatre.
