Caryl Churchill at STC
News to hand from Sydney Theatre Company: Seven Jewish Children, a play for Gaza by Caryl Churchill will be presented as a free rehearsed reading on Sunday 22 March 2009 at 7pm in Wharf 1. Ian Sinclair will direct the reading. Casting is still to be confirmed.
Approximately ten minutes in length, Seven Jewish Children is Churchill’s response to the situation in Gaza, written in January 2009 and first performed in February at the Royal Court Theatre, London amid the usual controversy that surrounds anything critical of Israel’s behaviour in that sliver of Palestine.
Caryl Churchill is one of the UK’s foremost playwrights. Previous productions of her work by Sydney Theatre Company have included Far Away directed by Benedict Andrews, Top Girls directed by Melissa Bruce and Serious Money directed by Simon Phillips. Other notable plays include Cloud Nine, Vinegar Tom, Mad Forest and Soft Cops.
The event is part of the STC’s Back Stage program, which includes play readings, “meet the artist” forums, pre-show briefings and back stage tours.

According to Churchill’s wishes, the play is licenced to STC, as to other theatres around the world on the condition that it is a free, unticketed event. So entry will be on a first-come first-served basis. Check out: www.sydneytheatre.com.au
