NGA SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP

January 8 2009

In a media release today, the National Gallery of Australia and Sony Foundation Australia announced the 16 students chosen for the annual Summer Art Scholarship program. The scholarship provides students with a unique learning opportunity that will expose them to the wide range of career options in the visual arts.

It brings together two Year 11 students from each state and territory to participate in a week-long program of activities centred on the National Gallery of Australia. This year’s applicants were required to make a visual and written response to an artwork and the winners were selected from more than 300 hopefuls. The artwork is Mike Parr’s Language and chaos (pictured here). Mike Parr will also take part in the program, meeting the students to discuss his work, inspiration and technique.

During their week, students will participate in a variety of activities and discussions with leading arts professionals, providing practical insights into visual arts career opportunities. Students will gain behind-the-scenes knowledge of the National Gallery of Australia’s permanent collection; take part in workshops and discussions with staff members including curators, conservators, designers and publishing staff; participate in workshops at the ANU School of Art; spend time in the Gallery with Mike Parr and observe his working process at Megalo Print Studio; as well as visit other Canberra institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery and Parliament House.

The program will also allow the students to experience the Gallery at the height of its summer exhibition schedule with several exhibitions open including the major international show Degas: master of French art, the first Degas exhibition ever mounted in Australia.
